BTTA Foundational Leadership

Initiate, ACTIVATE, lead.

BTTA Foundational Leadership is based on our original “Leadership Training Academy” initiative and is our initial training ground for change-makers, advocates and emerging leaders in the LGBTIQ+ community. This is a 2-day training program that will help build the core skills and techniques to effect positive cultural change.

In October 2019, we will be extending the core training with the following new programs:

FOUNDATIONAL LEADERSHIP

30-31 MAY 2019, MELBOURNE

GLAAD Media Engagement 101 +

  • Spokesperson and media engagement education for effective storytelling.

Inclusion & Diversity +

  • What do we mean when we use these terms to describe our activities and campaigns? Who are we including and what does diversity really look like.
  • A facilitated, practical workshop exploring our collective responses and ideas presented by Queerspace at Drummond Street Service.

Philanthropy & Fundraising +

Adaptive Leadership, resilience and preventing burnout +

  • What does adaptive leadership look like in the LGBTIQ+ sector? How do we build resilience in the face of setbacks, delay and lateral violence?
  • How do we support others, practice what we preach and develop self-awareness about the symptoms of burnout?
  • We’ll start the second day of training with an open facilitated discussion among participants to kick start our thinking on these key issues for ensuring LGBTIQ+ leaders stay engaged into the future.
  • Presented by Equality Australia .

Campaign Strategy +

  • How do we effectively advocate for positive change for LGBTIQ+ people? How do we tell persuasive stories, develop targeted strategies and work in collaboration with partners to achieve results that benefit our communities?
  • This 2-hour training provides an overview of frameworks to develop campaign strategies that work. We’ll be talking about how to understand and communicate the problem and solution, defining your target, working with key partners, choosing the right tactics, and developing a theory of change that gets results.
  • This is a training promote for LGBTIQ+ people who want to build their skills and capacity to advocate for change.

GLAAD MEDIA INSTITUTE MASTERCLASS

DAY 1 : Telling Your Story +

  • Messaging & media tools for today’s activist. Participants will learn the basics about media structure and how to tell their stories in traditional, online, and social media platforms. Equipped with research and best practices gleaned from more than 30 years of experience, GLAAD will work with participants to reach and teach the movable middle about the LGBTIQ community through compelling storytelling combined with the best and most up-to-date tools and know-how for general advocacy and media engagement.

DAY 2 : Building Media Strategy for Long-Term Change +

  • This advanced-level training is designed to help advocates and allies develop diversified media campaigns and strategies that shape the narrative and lead to awareness and change. We will talk about personal and organisational brand, creating content that reinforces your message, and waging multi-faceted media campaigns that educate and inspire people to action.

ADVANCED MEDIA ENGAGEMENT

Building Media Strategy for Long-Term Change +

  • This advanced-level training is designed to help advocates and allies develop diversified media campaigns and strategies that shape the narrative and lead to awareness and change. We will talk about personal and organisational brand, creating content that reinforces your message, and waging multi-faceted media campaigns that educate and inspire people to action.
  • This course is part II of the GLAAD Media Institute Masterclass offered as a one day program in Melbourne and part of the Foundational Plus program in Sydney.
  • Suitable for advocates who have attended the GLAAD Media Engagement 101 course.

FOUNDATIONAL PLUS

16-17 OCTOBER 2019, SYDNEy

Day 1 : Advanced Media Engagement +

  • Building Media Strategy for Long-Term Change - This advanced-level training is designed to help advocates and allies develop diversified media campaigns and strategies that shape the narrative and lead to awareness and change. We will talk about personal and organisational brand, creating content that reinforces your message, and waging multi-faceted media campaigns that educate and inspire people to action. Session length: All day with breaks.

Day 2 : Design Thinking +

  • Want to "Think Big" when it comes to your community initiatives, but not sure where to start? Learn the basics behind Design Thinking, a structured approach to driving innovation and creative problem solving. Human-centred at it's core, Design Thinking is a practical process to develop solutions for people. Delivered by Lara Husselbee. Session length: 2 hours.

Day 2 : Tell Your Story & Get It Seen +

  • This session will focus on personal narrative writing and how to get your work noticed. Delivered by Benjamin Law. Session length: 2 hours.

Day 2 : Courageous Leadership +

  • In a world of growing complexity and uncertainty, the call for courageous leadership continues to be heard and felt stronger and louder. This interactive session will introduce you to some of the core principles of leadership then allow you to collaborate with fresh minds and voices on real leadership challenges that you are currently experiencing and navigating, through a specific solutions-focussed framework. Delivered by Brandon Srot. Session length: 2-hours

Foundational Leadership is designed for LGBTIQ+ advocates and emerging community leaders as well as professionals from any sector or industry. You should attend if:

  • You want to explore what it means to be an authentic and inclusive LGBTIQ+ role model in your community or organisation.

  • You want to hone your skills as a spokesperson and find out how to engage with the media effectively and tell powerful stories that move the hearts and minds of the people and communities that matter.

  • You want to expand your network and collaborate in a meaningful way with other passionate advocates.

  • We welcome allies who are working in the LGBTIQ+ community to participate.
